| Quick-fire goals give Seongnam victory

SEONGNAM - Two goals in the space of 90 second-half seconds gave Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Al Karama in the first leg of their AFC Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday leaving the tie delicately balanced ahead of next week’s return game in Syria.
Senghor Koupouleni grabbed a precious away goal early in the first half for last year’s runners-up but second half strikes by substitute Kim Min-ho and Son Dae-ho gave Seongnam victory and a slender advantage to defend in the second leg in Homs.
There was a cagey start to the game and with heavy rain having fallen steadily for the past 36 hours in Korea, creating conditions that didn’t help either team.
It was the visitors who adapted quicker and after eight minutes, they had the first attempt on goals as Hassan Abbas let fly from 25 yards with a shot that Seongnam keeper Kim Yong-dae acrobatically tipped over.
A minute later the Syrians were in front. Zyad Chaabo’s snapshot from just inside the area cannoned off the crossbar but with goalkeeper Kim stranded, Senegalese striker Senghor Koupouleni had the simple job of heading the rebound into an empty net from close range for his third goal of the competition.
The seven-time K-League champions were struggling to keep possession and when they did, were unable to penetrate a well-organised Syrian team who belied their reputation as poor travellers.
It was midway through the first half by the time Seongnam caused any problems for the Syrian champions. Kim Do-heon’s low free-kick curled around the side of the west Asian wall and was headed for the bottom left corner of Mosab Balhous’s net until defender Fabio Santos rushed back to make a goal-saving block on the line.
The second half continued in the same vein with Seongnam looking short of ideas. As the game passed the hour, Kim Hak-bum’s team were still struggling to create any openings and as the rain finally eased, Al Karama almost added to their lead after 65 minutes.
Cho Byung-kuk hesitated in the tackle in the Seongnam area, leaving substitute Leandro Netto with only the keeper to beat but his weak shot was easily saved.
Seongnam finally drew level after 73 minutes. Mota broke free on the left side of the area and his ball across the face of goal was cleared only as far as Kim Min-ho standing on the edge of the six-yard box and the substitute made no mistake as he fired the ball home.
A minute later Seongnam were ahead. Son Dae-ho arrived late at the far post to head home a left-sided corner from fellow international midfielder Kim Do-heon.
Al Karama were stunned and a minute later, Nam Ki-il shot just wide from close range.
Seongnam had further chances to increase their lead but the game finished 2-1, meaning that there will be plenty to play for next Wednesday at Khaled Ibn Al Waleed Stadium, a venue where Al Karama have yet to taste defeat in nine AFC Champions League games.
